Capturing Loch Con
The walk to Loch Con, located on the road between Blair Atholl and Kinloch Rannch, is a truly stunning one, initially running above Loch Errochty until dropping down to its smaller counterpart. We have been many times in the late spring and summer, often wild camping, and it remains one of our favourite Perthshire walks when we are in the mood for somewhere a bit remote.
There’s a wide and fairly easy pathway to Loch Con—it does slope upwards at first, but not too steeply and soon levels out. The main joy of the walk is, of course, the scenery. After parking on the road opposite the start of the track near Trinafour, (///thick.clapper.fragment on What3Words) and setting off, you’re very soon presented with gorgeous views of Loch Errochty which continue for the first half of the walk. Although the mostly bare hillsides are not ideal from a biodiversity perspective, there is still plenty to admire and enjoy.
The second half of the walk is when Loch Con itself comes into view, which can only be described as a very pretty loch, studded with small islands and a peninsula, all covered with beautifully weathered trees. These are a reminder of what the landscape could and should look like, and are wonderful to see. It’s definitely worth stopping to photograph and explore the bothy, which has it’s own rustic charm and feels like it could tell many tales if it wanted!
You can choose to stop at the bothy, or continue round to explore the loch side and peninsula. Look out for intricately twisted trees, a lovely view back towards the bothy and crystal clear water. As the trees so eloquently show, it can be wld and windy out here, so do make sure you’ve wrapped up warmly.
As long as the weather is settled, this is a great time of year to do the Loch Con walk, as it can be plagued by horseflies, or clegs, in the summer. So if make sure you have plenty of insect repellent and are well covered up! It’s important to be well equipped for hill walking too, with plenty of water, decent footwear and a raincoat! And don’t forget to bring your picnic, camera, and the expectation of a wonderful few hours in the great outdoors.
