Driving Through Amulree and Glen Quaich
The road over the hill from Inver, just opposite Dunkeld, is one of our favourites. We frequently go to the Rumbling Bridge for a little walk by the river — you can even access the other end of the famous Hermitage walk from here too. But it’s also nice just to drive!
You’ll go through Amulree, a tiny hamlet located on the road towards Crieff. It includes an extremely picturesque bridge over the pretty River Braan and some charming houses. The views are incredible, and continue to be so all the way to Crieff itself—but you can also choose to turn off the road here and into Glen Quaich. Note that this road is closed in the winter months, so if you’re planning to drive this route, do it soon!
The Glen Quaich road runs along the side of Loch Freuchie for some time and there’s some beautiful houses visible on the opposite side. You’ll also pass some quaint farm buildings and look out for the huge variety of birdlife occupying the surrounding countryside.
After some time, the narrow road begins to climb steeply, turning sharply as it does so. Look out for the ruined cottage on your left at this point. Soon the road will open out to show breathtaking scenes of sweeping moorland and bleak hillsides. The little bothy/fishing hut at the top of Urlar Moor is a particularly great place for some photos in this wild area of Perthshire.
After a while, the road begins to drop sharply, an indication that you’re nearing Kenmore. Trees will appear fairly suddenly and you may catch a glimpse of Loch Tay. At the bottom of the road, turn right, then left to reach Kenmore beach for a refreshing stroll with a breath-taking view.
We hope this inspires you for a drive in this gorgeous scenery!
