5 Favourite Things About Spring

At the start of a new season, I usually like to do an article where I share some of the things we can all look forward to over the next few months. Some seasons are harder than others, but spring, of course, is the easy one. Even if it’s not our very favourite season, no one is sorry to see it come.

Many highlights of spring are very obvious though—new shoots, spring flowers, lighter mornings and evenings, a bit more heat from the sun, I could go on… So for this article I tried to think of some slightly more specific examples that include activities to tick off the spring bucket list!

Flowers at home

I’ve already mentioned spring flowers, but here I’m specifically talking about daffodils and tulips. What joyful things they are! Bright and abundant, no spring would be complete without them.

The fact that these flowers are widely available means that having bunches in our homes—either picked from our own gardens or bought relatively cheaply—is a wonderful and easy way to bring the feeling of spring indoors, not to mention a pop of glorious colour to cheer up the rainy days.

Nature walks

We all know that new life is shooting up everywhere, but it’s so important to take the time to go and actually see it happening, or it may pass us by without filling us with joy.

You could try making a list of all the spring-like things you could find and see how many you can tick off. Or try finding an individual patch of bulbs, or a bush or tree that you can visit regularly to watch its progress. Take note of small things, like birdsong, the gentle warmth of spring sunshine, or the smell of rain-soaked earth. Immerse yourself in this magical season as much as you can. Check out our ‘Walks’ category for ideas on where to go.

Gardening fun

Another way to get immersed in the coming of spring is to spend time in the garden, whether you’re a keen gardener, like to plant up a few pots, do the bare minimum of weeding, or—like me—just plan to sit in the sun with a mug of tea!

A few pots are a good place to start if you haven’t really done any gardening before, and you can also fill some time in planning what you’d like to have in them. Perhaps spend an afternoon pottering about in your local garden centre. Even if you don’t have much of a garden, a windowsill can do the trick, or look into indoor gardens, terrariums or living walls.

Creative projects

It’s always good to have a creative project to help us through the long winter evenings, but the advent of spring doesn’t mean we should stop creating. You may feel like switching to a new project though. Lay the scarf you were knitting aside until autumn and try embroidering a floral cushion cover, or use a mild and dry day to take some furniture into the garden and paint it.

Even in the kitchen, spicy water flavours like cinnamon, orange and nutmeg are out in favour of zingy ones, such as fresh mint, zesty lime or early rhubarb. So whatever creativity looks like for you, or if you’re still figuring that out, why not try a new project or hobby this season?

Baby animals

This one doesn’t need much explanation — I mean, who doesn’t love seeing gawky lambs, tiny bunnies or fluffy ducklings? However, consider going to a petting zoo, open farm or even just your local duck pond and really enjoying the cuteness overload! Auchingarrich Wildlife Park is a great option for this, and there’s also Active Kids Adventure Park and Stewart Tower Dairy.

What are your favourite things about spring? Why not make your own list?
